Is this it?
That’s what I asked myself as I walked out of yet another senior leadership meeting—this time, having just presented the strategic communications plan for one of the biggest projects of my career. On paper, I was thriving—recognized as a rising star, offered leadership training, and on the trajectory to a director position.
But inside? I was burnt out. Drained. Done.
Years of relentless effort—earning qualifications, managing projects, navigating office politics, mastering soft skills, and enduring long hours—had taken their toll. I was up early, often working through my annual leave, glued to my office mobile. As the daughter and granddaughter of immigrants who embodied resilience and an unwavering work ethic, I knew the value of hard work. But this? This wasn’t living; it was merely existing.
The office environment was suffocating. The undercurrents of bitterness, incessant gossip, passive-aggressive remarks about salaries, and performative overworking just to be ‘seen’—it was draining. The sparkle had faded—not just in me, but in everyone seated around that boardroom table.Meetup
That day, I realized: I’d learned all I could in that world. I didn’t want to become the version of “success” I saw ahead of me. So, I made the leap. Eventually, I built my own business. And while there are challenging days, when I reflect, I no longer ask, “Is this it?”Birmingham LGBT
